City arcade fronts tribunal after police drug sting

By Stephanie Ferrier

The operators of a Melbourne amusement arcade have agreed to improve video surveillance, in a move to clean up alleged heroin dealing in the area.

The City Fun Centre arcade in Bourke Street was taken to VCAT over the drug problem, after a police sting netted 18 people on drug related offences last year.

Under a VCAT order, the owners have agreed to upgrade their video camera systems and allow police access to the footage.

They will also work on ways of keeping known drug dealers out of the arcade.

Anyone know which arcade this is? We got any Melbourne friends lurking?

People call that place Blue house I believe (its the arcade with IIDX if you've been before). I don't really know/care because it never really advertises itself as an arcade and has a set regular customer base to keep itself going. Its owned by a man named Eric Chan (dunno about the surname). He owns a couple of places around the corner (including another arcade which I believe is named Chinatown amusements/yellow house for short). Just to let you guys know the names are extremely illusive because nobody really knows or cares.

People looking for drugs have come up and asked me and people around there for some/where they can find some (so i'd assume dealers like to hang out there). Ugh dealers gotta ruin all my fun =(

Say bye to the arcade scene in Melbourne! White House was closed down after a string of incidents like this if you remember and that was just around the corner from this place.

Yeah, we know of the *Houses, just didn't know which was placed where.

Had a feeling it might be one of them. And I have been there a few times. When I holiday in Melbourne, I usually stay in a hotel that's a couple of blocks away from one of them. It had the Pop'n machine last time I was there.

Melbourne hey? Considering its a city Chopper Read has once called the unofficial murder capital of Australia, I'm actually glad that they've decided to keep things civil and sell drugs to the inquisitive public rather than shank fellow gamers with toothbrushes. Curse those normal people for playing in our arcades! Curse them good!

im really not suprissed white house closed down, when iw as there years ago i was scared just standingoutside it, any and everyone who walked in there looked like an asian gang member. its a pitty cause i wanted to play there ddr machine :(. as for blue house, im not really suprrised from my last experience, it alloud smoking the the arcade ( dont know about now ) but if an arcade alows something like that at the risk of damaging there machines then a little extra security might go a stray.

Galactic Circus is a lumbering monstrosity. It has a lot of awesome games, but suffers from many of the same problems our arcades do, eg: poor technical support, staff that don't care about games/gamers.

That said, it's part of the Casino, and not likely to ever be shut down.

The *Houses on the other hand have always been dingy, poorly-lit little places, packed with far too many people you wouldn't really want to run into. I went there regularly whenever I was in town, but I didn't exactly feel safe at night (especially in the larger one, where I once accidentally dropped a coin into a rubbish bucket under the change machine, then discovered someone had puked in it).

We've had it pretty good in Brisbane in terms of venue quality, it's just the quality of games where we've lagged behind.
