RTF SDC2010 - Full Score Breakdown Per Round
« on: December 07, 2010, 01:39:56 AM »
I'm sure there are plenty of people who are curious how they went in individual rounds, so I'll provide here the per-song and per-round scores, ranked per round to show who got eliminated where.

Firstly, an explanation of our scoring system.

The scoring method we currently use is based on a system created by one of the original Japanese DDR teams, in response to Konami-run DDR competitions that used machine score. At the time, machine score had no real correlation to step accuracy, and was not seen as a 'true' measure of a player's skill.

This system has been modified as game systems changed, and currently assigns point values to each accuracy grade as follows:
Marvellous    Perfect    Great    Good    Almost    Boo    OK    N.G
01234505

Therefore, the player with the lowest score is the most accurate.

Now, on to the competition!

Round 1 - Songs randomly selected: Waiting 4 u + DUB-I-DUB (2008 X-edit)

Name    Song    Marv    Perf    Great    Good    Boo    Miss    OK    N.G    Score

Hah. I knew it. that asian girl won. There was a look in her eyes that says it all. Man One of these days, I should show her how to do ballroom dancing.

...
I wish I was as accurate as her...then again, my dancing would be sloppy after that. It's good to know that I came 12th. That means I need a bit more rhythm next time. I should practice more on my dancing whenever I have the time. Are any of you guys that were in the comp go to these forums?

ChinoZaki likes to troll, probably best not to take his word for anything just yet ;)

Wendy is most likely who you're thinking of. She's been playing competitively for a long time now. That kind of accuracy comes with constant practise, so keep at it. Everyone has a different playstyle though, so don't feel too worried about copying hers. Play the way that feels natural to you.

A bit over half the people who entered the comp post here on the forums, or a couple who used to post here regularly. We had a fairly short promo run, so it was mostly word-of-mouth that got people there. We'll have a bit more time to prepare for our next event, so there'll be more time to get the word out.

You know. If it wasn't for the church calling me for help. I would prpbably go straight to the semis no problem.
I'm going to go and play some more DDR at the grand plaza tomorrow. I'm going to pull off some more freestyle dance routines. On that day of the comp, I made a fool of myself and realised I wasn't really dancing, so I'm going back and start all over.
I'm going to pull some spins, pirouettes, shuffle, and some more hand movements. Those hand movements would be more important. I always seem to make them flop, so I'm going to watch them as I play (that is if I can watch them and not miss the screen. HAHAHAHA!!!). I'm going to move.

Speaking of that. What did you guys think of my play style? I try to avoid stepping on the same arrow with the same foot.

I better go and get something to eat.

I'd say your style was more suited to performance than scoring, and as far as I can tell that's what you want anyway.  People commented to me on the day that your style was refreshing because it was suited to that.  Performance sections in comps are usually in the big ones only, although in the smaller ones (like this time) performances for exhibition are welcome - if you want to do something, just tell us before or on the day, and we'll slot you in, no charge, and I'll gladly film any routine you come up with, no matter how crap or amazing it is.  I mean, we'd have a full-on performance comp, but while the demand is there, people willing to do it aren't.  People are all talk.  That being said, although we know nothing yet, the performance sections are usually in our big comps - which means May.  First week of May, to be as close to exact as possible.  You've definitely got enough talent for that - work on what you've got, build your own style, look up a few freestyle/performance videos on Youtube (or trawl for some in our Youtube DDR thread), build an ensemble.

My advice?  Find a song or two or three, work out a routine.  Best way to do it is to go onto Light or whatever the non-Beginner difficulty is called nowadays, find a relatively easy song, and play it a few times.  Find places you can do all those things you mentioned.  Find places you can spin, kneedrop, headbutt, bumdrop, shoulder drop, whatever moves you think would work.  Keep in mind you can spin in more ways than one - pirouettes is a spin as well, technically; there's the traditional ULDR spin (or reverse), and you can do that with your feet a few different ways, and once upon a time there was a Korean DDR team called the A-Team (no relation to THE A-Team) which did it with hands and knees (mostly hands).  If you have two diagonal jumps, you can hit the second set with your hands for good effect.  There's the classic 'foot slide' move, where you use the same foot to hit two arrows, which can be a good effect in some situations.  There's a myriad of things you can do.  For best effect, memorise the steps as best you can and play on mirror (so you can face the audience).  But this isn't what most people do, too much to remember, y'know.  Of course, you can do Expert songs too if you want...

Finally, if you're entering a performance competition, one way to wow the judges is to wear a costume.  Even if it's just a business suit, it shows effort.  Oh, and the bigger comps we have tend to have actual prize money in the performance section, simply because performances means big business for the arcade.  It's a lure.  And quite a substantial amount too - hundreds.  I'd like to see a bigger turnout for the performance comps...I guess that's why prize money is offered.  Like a bounty.  (I'm not promising there is money.  It's not my money!)

If you want to learn how to play for scoring, how to pass hard stuff, or whatever...that's different altogether.  There's a number of different ways, but the key is variety.  Don't play the same song twice if you can help it, push the difficulty if you can, and always play something 'too hard' for the last song - something you probably won't pass.  That, and putting enough time and money into the game.  If you feel you're not getting better, keep going anyway, as long as you're trying different songs eventually you'll get over that barrier and it'll be smooth sailing again for a while.  That's all there is to it.  Oh, and eventually, around the 9-10 (13-16) foot difficulty mark, you can improve a bit more by making edits, if that's possible.

Oh, and remember there's an ITG2 machine at the Hyperdome with r21 on it, so you can play custom songs.  A bit of Google-Fu will reveal more info.  As long as nobody else is around (and not doing the same), nobody will care if you make songs over 2 minutes in length.  It's something different.

What on earth makes you think you would have gotten top 4?

Uhhh Semi would have been Top 8, not Top 4. Achievable.

finals = top 2
semis = top 4
quarter = top 8

in -this- tournament setup you would have been right Ebe, but in all other scenarios this isn't the case (i also instinctively thought that semis = top 4, but this case is different)

also, State Champion

however tbh it just isn't good enough. you cant argue with this, players like me, dan, kevin etc. who are all a lot better than you all agree with this. we all get smeg and it's really annoying. Dan gets pad greats like crazy. I dont even bother maing there, its a waste

Look at the scores he got.

Not achievable.

Not that it really matters, anyway...

I thought semis was top 4 - my mistake - but I stand by what I said.

I personally think Steve would be a better DDR player than you guys because he moves to the rhythm, you know... It's not just about stepping on arrows accurately.
