A question of how you move and groove
« on: December 11, 2010, 10:12:50 PM »
After the comp, I noticed that some players play/dance quite differently: some play while holding the bar, pressing the buttons with dead accuracy. Others play freely.Others play with extreme speed and stamina. Others dance to the music. Others just mush buttons. Others play without looking at the screens. Others look at the screen...now and then. So I thought. How do people play their DDR. Thus the poll.

With good technique, or "speed dancing" as the poll calls it. I step really really hard, on the parts of the panels nearest to the centre square.

That can be done without 'speed' by stepping shallow to minimise energy expenditure though.  Which I guess is more important without bar.  You definitely don't want to step on the outside of the pad if you can help it (but again, without bar, sometimes it seems inevitable...)

But me, I'm definitely 'various'.

Lachlan and I are In The Groove players

We were DDR players when we started (mid-late 2006), but moved on to ITG in late 2007, got our cab in august 2008 and have been playing customs ever since

That being said, I play bar with minimal movement, trying to step only on that little circle on the inside of each panel. This took alot of training to do - it doesn't come naturally. Basically just try to go as fast as possible for as long as possible, get good marvelous attack, try to remain calm and in control of my movement pretty much....

-//-

There are many different kinds of player around. Especially in Brisbane, there is a rift of sorts that exists between people like Gurt, Ebe, Pascal, Shannon and us (myself Lac Wendy etc). Carlos is the State Champion, so he is something akin to a stenographer, holds no REAL power but does whatever the hell he wants. He is too cool for this school. It's no secret that there have been some strong verbal conflicts on this forum in the past, but they all died down since nobody actually cared and it was just to find something exciting to do.

Alot of Brisbane DDR history is on this forum, and if you really want to get into it, there are some really good reads to be found

also, what does this mean:

(don't really don't like you're dancing, so that's almost a freestyle)

however tbh it just isn't good enough. you cant argue with this, players like me, dan, kevin etc. who are all a lot better than you all agree with this. we all get smeg and it's really annoying. Dan gets pad greats like crazy. I dont even bother maing there, its a waste

I guess I'd be kind of an interesting case study here. I didn't start with DDR, I started on Pop'N'Stage, which is either 5 or 6 panel. Thanks to this I got used to crossovers early; you also had to step big because the machine was in horrible condition. I played with Amber; interestingly we still step almost the exact same way. The other big difference is that I'm predominantly a doubles player; I can pass higher-rated songs on doubles than I can on single-panel and I think this is because my build holds me back from tiny-stepping and stamina-edits. Even just walking around you can tell I have a really different way of moving to most of the other players around atm. My legs lock up in stamina edits, but on the other hand my build is great for doubles charts with a lot of twists and cross-panel movement, as well and crossovers in general. Oh, and I've never used the bar so my balance is pretty good, although I've gotta admit having a low center of gravity helps.

Um, you know I'm actually a stenographer, right?  ;D

Either way I don't give a crap about rifts or sides, definitely not.  I'm not going to start an argument over some arrows.  I think it's great if people achieve stuff.  And I think really it's good that such conflicts happened because it shows that both 'sides' are still passionate about DDR.  And nobody can lose from that, right?  Main thing is, we're not working against each other.  And we welcome input and suggestions for future comps, etc from anybody.

But anyway, back on topic...

I thrust a lot.

I passed BIMP with no limbs.  Crotch only.  (FINAL DESTINATION.) Beat THAT!   :D  Ask Bill...it was back in July.  I 'retired' foolstyling after that...or rather, surgery, y'know, I've been reluctant to headbutt after that, and lost my form consequently.

FINAL DESTINATION.

that song is really hard >_<

and Brisbanes DDR history is so diverse and detailed

If anything the conflict made it MORE interesting than usual. Ergo, I look back on it and feel better that it happened than if nothing had happened at all. I love telling the Brisbane DDR story to people (what I know of it), even though I wasn't there for 80% of it D=

My build holds me back from tiny-stepping and stamina-edits. My legs lock up in stamina edits.

This is because your stamina is lacking - if you improve your stamina, your legs will no longer lock up. I also suffered this problem, once, a long time ago, but no more.

I've never recorded any. Also, I don't think the leg-locking thing is quite the same, when I'm worn out it's a different feeling, like walking through mud.

Pretty impressive routine!

No bar and all that flailing certainly makes Utopia doubles look a lot harder than it really is, though.

Ahh yes I have seen plenty of this. I love how the people can create a routine from a song. It goes together like...broadway. It's too bad though. If there were no bars, I reckon freestyle would be heaps of  fun. All I need is a small grinder to cut off the bars and...

as for the utopia thing, I reckon he should at least keep his hands in his pockets. It'll make him look like he's doing the riverdance. HAHAHAHA!!! Now that would be great freestylng.
