IRC channel: #brisbemani on AustNet (re-registered)
« on: November 09, 2008, 04:00:07 PM »
In the interests of improving communication, I've re-registered #brisbemani on AustNet.

It's already in Google and mentioned in the depth of some sites, so (a) I'm not "stealing" a name, I'm re-registering a defunct one, and (b) it saves on doubling up information.  Frankly I don't care who "owns" the channel, I only care that nobody goes power-mad and/or bans everybody.  I'm willing to transfer it to the "rightful owner" or someone impartial to RTF/Team whatsit/nobarteam type politics if that makes people happy, whatever the majority want.  I also picked AustNet because it's a good all-rounder without weirdo furry channels, and it has good services unlike EFnet.  I know other Bemani channels are on other servers, but they own most of those servers.  Clients will let you join more than one server, you know.

To those who haven't used IRC before:
It's a chatroom.  A 24/7 one.  It's old as the internet itself.  The best way to see what it is, is to look.  You'll need a program to do this; Google for mIRC or XChat, or...there's plenty more, and some interface with MSN/AIM/YIM/ICQ or browsers seamlessly.  A java client might be a good option down the track.  Anyway, download mIRC if you're very n00b or XChat if you're after an alternative, then:
1. Set up your nick - this is what you'll be known as on IRC.  You'll have to pick an alternative too in case that's taken (or if you disconnect and reconnect so fast you see yourself, which could happen quite often if you're unlucky).  In XChat, you can pick three instead of two.
2. Your full name info - put whatever.  People can see this so feel free to put a witty comment.  Your email - put whatever, I don't think this is used.
3. Set server (in the server tab) to Austnet and hit connect.  Doesn't matter which AustNet server, they're all connected.
4. It'll connect and a window will pop up.  You want to join #brisbemani - if you hate clicking on things, close the popup, and in the little chat box down the bottom type "/join #brisbemani".
5. That's it!

Rules are as follows:
1. The only rule is don't attack the chatroom with floods or crap like that.  No DoS attacks in other words.  Swear, insult others, don't care.  If people don't like it, they can put them on ignore.
2. It's not Brisbane only, like last time - feel free to invite interstate people.

I'll be in the chatroom 24/7 so there'll always be someone there.  If you leave your computer on when you go to bed, do the same because if somebody talks you'll see it.  The best way to populate the channel is for people to simply idle there.  I'm already taking the liberty of inviting a few other Bemani folk in.  IRC clients use hardly any CPU power so it's pretty harmless to leave them running while you do other stuff, plus if anyone says anything, you can respond whenever, and other people can respond whenever, and it's hella sweet.  It's like TV:  Leave it running, it's entertaining when other stuff is not.  I think it really would have helped us to have a chatroom in the past week.

I've currently set the topic to -t, which means anybody can set it.  This is temporary until some people other than me get appointed as ops.  I'd like to hear people's opinions on this - how many people should get ops (eg everybody, nobody, team leaders, three people only, etc), and if it's a suggestion of a few people, I'd like people to make suggestions as to who should get ops.  The main things are I do NOT want to have anyone power-mad INCLUDING myself, and I want the damn thing to be used so everybody wins.  This isn't a peeing contest.  FWIW I'm in favour of the "everyone we know gets ops" model, which pretty much means everyone here would get ops, but someone who joins out of the blue to see what the channel is and could be a spammer would not.  At the very least I think people who own sites should have ops so they can use the topic for news, etc.

The channel is not officially affiliated with any sites so basically feel free to advertise your site/s on it, including in topic, for now.  We'll work out the details later, I just want everyone to join.  My motivation?  If we had a chat room, no way in hell would I have gone to the invisible competition, I could just read what people said and figure it out from the lack of discussion!

Questions/comments?  No reply is too stupid, even if it's from Carlos after midnight.  I'll temp op anybody who joins.  Questions about IRC in general are also welcome.

Maybe a drink would help!

Nobody's joined yet (I'm not surprised at all, I haven't actually sent anyone a MSN message or anything yet) but like I said, it's easy to idle on IRC.  And that's exactly what I'm doing - I'm already on other networks so it's no skin off my back.

I realise it's about as much of an incentive as piss-flavoured ice cream, but once I get a few people in, I'll divulge a little secret.  Well, a big secret.  No, I'm not gay (although...!).  Trust me, it's a good one.

Aaaand Miracle just joined, so that's one.

I stuffed around for a long time trying to get the java IRC client to work with this forum properly. There are mods for SMF that integrate a pjIRC window, but they haven't been updated in a long time.

I haven't had mIRC installed on my PC for years. Might give it another bash later in the week.

This sounds like where I thought of the name "Brisbemani" for the forum

is it okay if we still use it?

however tbh it just isn't good enough. you cant argue with this, players like me, dan, kevin etc. who are all a lot better than you all agree with this. we all get smeg and it's really annoying. Dan gets pad greats like crazy. I dont even bother maing there, its a waste

I should point out that you can just download ChatZilla if you use Firefox - it's a plugin.

I'm working on finding a java client that doesn't suck, but it'a 3am, so meh.  I do have work tomorrow, I should go to bed.

EDIT:  A tempory fix is to use this: http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=hooked.austnet.org&channel=%23brisbemani - FWIW I'm waiting for four specific people to be online at the same time so I can coax them all in and actually get some talk happening.  Shouldn't be hard to get the ball rolling, they just haven't been online!

IRC Chat mod has been added to the forum, if anyone's too lazy to download mIRC. This should also mean people can get on during the day or when away from their home PCs.

I figure it's obvious but I'm at work during the day - I'm away between roughly 7am and 5:50pm.  And don't expect me too responsive at 6am - I mean, I'm responsive now instead, so Go Easy!!

It's worth downloading mIRC if you intend to use the chatroom regularly at the same time on the same day because it has advantages like logs so you can see what was the Last Message, custom scripts that tell everybody you're listening to Slake in iTunes, etc.  But if you're only there for the purposes of Checking You Out then that plugin will never let you down.  mIRC is the best way to Make Your Move though.  It makes a lot more Sense when you're using it.

I'm bored, stupid 3am.  I should go to bed instead of staying up over the night.  Anyway, join the channel!  We need Somebody Like You, so Come With Me!  'Toastem Ride Poison Nuts Open Up Your Smile'!

So 1-2-3-4-5-6 DO IT!!  Okay, I broke my combo there.  smeg.  It'll Be OK!

Default period is over, I've started adding people with ops.  Anyone from this forum or the Brisbemani forum will get added.

Added so far:
azninsect
GurtyGurt
Least100Seraphs

ebe's not added because I don't know his registered name/s.

If you want to be added, you have to register; when you join type: /msg NickOP register <password> <email address> - this will register your nickname to your IP so nobody can steal it and impersonate you.  When you join in future type:  /msg NickOP identify <password> - you should get opped automatically.  If you don't care, no biggie.  It means you can change the topic, kick people, ban people - stuff you don't need to do to enjoy yourself...

Membership is slowly growing.  It's worth pointing out to people not used to IRC that talk is very slow on virtually any channel.  Don't expect conversation every 5 minutes.  When people are awake you might get talk every 20 minutes at best, although obviously if someone starts a conversation there's gonna be constant talk for quite a while.  Basically, stick around, and if you come on a quiet day, it might be busy the next day.  It's not like MSN or anything.

Thanks to everyone who's visited so far and hope you stick around!

Stiiiiill going.  I've been d/cing like a whore thanks to me leeching something, so I haven't publicised much more because...you know, I'd rather actually be there when I do so.  I lost packets trying to reply to this post, for crying out loud!

Anyway, the 'secret' I mentioned as probably everybody knows now is I plan to import a beatmania THE FINAL cabinet.  However, I just realised the one I was looking at wouldn't fit through my door!  This leaves three options:

1. Find a beatmania THE FINAL cabinet that will.
2. Find a beatmania cabinet that will (easy), and find an upgrade.
3. Find a beatmania cabinet that will (easy), put a J-Pac in it and use MAME.

Obviously 3 is a great solution but I don't know that beatmania is JAMMA so I've posted on BemaniStyle about it.  DDR is JAMMA of course, and JAMMA is pretty much an industry standard because...well, because they needed one back in 1985 or so.  But it's a huge gamble to do such a thing, so...I need info, or better yet, I need what I actually want.

If all plans fail I guess I'll have to default to a MAME cabinet...or save up and get a Pop'n cabinet.  Hmm...

EDIT: Or a MAME cabinet and a TV.  Forgot to mention I'm doing a suprisingly good job of saving...which is moot because it'll pay off the credit card.  Bah!

I'm thinking of scheduling a recommended 'weekly online meetup' on IRC, on a regular basis, like every Saturday from 7PM to 10PM.  The idea is, people would make an effort to be on at those times specifically.  Some might be there earlier, after, or forever - but people have a specific time to join when other people will be doing the same, so hopefully people would do that and stick around.

Ideas/suggestions for better times?
